Parent and Family Engagement Policy

 

In support of strengthening student academic achievement, Edendale Middle School receives Title I, Part A funds and therefore we jointly developed with, agreed on with, and distributed to parents and family members of participating children this written parent and family engagement policy, agreed on by such parents, that describes the means of carrying out the requirements of The Every Students Succeeds Act (ESSA) Section 1116.  This document serves as notification of the policy.

 

Edendale Middle School understands that parent and family engagement means the participation of parents and families in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring:

  • Parents and families play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning
  • Parents and families are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school
  • Parents and families are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child

 

Edendale Middle School agrees to implement the following requirements as outlined by ESSA Section 1116:

 

  1. ANNUAL TITLE I MEETING
  • On November 1, 2018 during the Coffee Club Meeting, Edendale Middle School will inform parents of  the requirements of the Title I and the school’s participation as well as the parents’ rights to be involved (ESSA Section 1116[c][1]).

 

  1. FLEXIBLE NUMBER OF MEETINGS
  • Edendale Middle School will offer a flexible number of engagement meetings at times convenient for families (ESSA Section 1116[c][2]). During the meetings, parents will be provided with timely information about Title I Part A programs (ESSA Section 1116[c][4][A]).

  1. Jointly Developed
  • For the purpose of involving parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of programs under Title I, including the planning, review and improvement of the school and parent and family engagement policy and the joint development of the schoolwide program plan, Edendale Middle School parents were invited to attend the School Site Council Meeting, May 30, 2018 and the ELAC Meeting, May 24, 2018. Parents received information about school’s Parent and Family Engagement Plan and were informed of their parental right to be involved in the planning and development of the plan through meetings, surveys and questionnaires.  Parents were informed that if the plan is not satisfactory to parents, they may submit comments on the plan to the school administrator.  The plan will be sent home with students at the beginning of each school year and posted on the school’s website (ESSA Section 1116[c][3]).
  • Edendale Middle School jointly developed with parents the School-Parent Compact during the Coffee Club Meeting, September 20, 2018

 

  1. COMMUNICATION
  • Edendale Middle School provides parents of participating children timely information about program under Title I, including:
  1. a description and explanation of the curriculum in use,
  2. forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress,
  3. achievement levels of the challenging State academic standards, and
  4. if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicable possible (ESSA Section 1116[e][1]).
  • Information related to the school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities, are sent to the parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students can understand (ESSA Section 1116[f]). Edendale Middle School provides opportunities for the following regular meetings that allow the parents to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children (ESSA Section 1116[c][4][C]).  The information regarding the meetings and events is available on the school website: (ESSA Section 1116[c][4][B] and ESSA Section 1116[e][5]).).

  • Edendale Middle School coordinates with Ashland Community Association, Ashland Place, La Familia, Ashland Youth Complex, Eden Collaborative, Alameda County Public Works Agency, Alameda County Sherriff’s Department, My Eden Voice, Barbara Lee Center for Wellness and Health, Bike East Bay, Alameda Public Health Department, RESTORE Women’s Wellness Center, CRUNCH Gym to encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children (ESSA Section 1116[e][5]).

 

  1. STAFF TRAINING
  • During the staff meeting on October 17, staff received information regarding the value of parent contributions, and in how to work with parents as equal partners (ESSA Section 1116[e][3].

The policy was adopted by Edendale Middle School on October 30, 2018 and will be in effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

The policy will be distributed to all parents of students participating in the Title I Part A program on or before December 27, 2018.
